Sheer luxuries combined with a breathtaking location are not the only unique features of the Jomsom Mountain Resort. It also prides itself as being one of the few truly "green" resorts in Asia. And why not? Since its evolution and design are intimately liked to the promotion of aesthetic values, utmost care has been taken not to exploit and degrade the natural resources of the area. As a result, the proper treatment and recycling of liquid effluent, stack emissions and solid and liquid wastes and waste water reuse are an integral part of the resort's design that meets the stringent requirements of the World Bank's environment standards.
Similarly, emissions from the diesel generator, which has been installed as a back-up power source, comply with World Bank guidelines. An underground tank with secondary containment is used for storing the diesel so as to prevent spillage, which could lead to soil contamination.
The water sources of the resort are the Kali Gandaki Springs. The water is treated in state-of-the-art filtration plants bringing the water quality at par with WHO standards.
Almost all the construction materials have been transported from outside Jomsom. To save the trees, local wood has not been used. In fact, the resort has carried out plantations around the area in an effort to bring greenery to the desert plateau on which it stands.
On the employment front, local labor has been given extra priority. According to the promoters, the job opportunities that the resort provides have encouraged the local youth to stay in Jomsom. This will, to a certain extent, reduce migration in the long run which, in turn, will help in averting the dilution of local values and traditions.
Jomsom is a popular destination for trekkers. It can also be reached by small aircraft or helicopter. There are daily flights to Jomsom from Pokhara. The 18-minute flight takes off from Pokhara early in the morning when there are no clouds. The passengers, therefore, are able to experience a most fitting prelude and a promise of the pleasures in store at Jomsom Mountain Resort where a vacation will turn out to be most invigorating for both the body and mind.
